Applications of Fiber Optic Pigtail Cable Assemblies
Pigtail cable assemblies are primarily used for internal connections in optical splitters, patch panels, and splice boxes, where raw optical fibers need to be equipped with factory connectors. They are widely used in FTTH (Fiber to the Home) networks, data centers, enterprise networks, and industrial optical systems, where fast installation and reliable, reproducible connections are essential.
Singlemode pigtail cables – such as those compliant with G.652D and G.657A standards – are designed for long-distance, high-bandwidth backbone and subscriber connections. The G.657A1/A2 types are particularly flexible, with better bending tolerance, making them safe for use in tight cable pathways, residential FTTH endpoints, and crowded rack cabinets.
Connector Types and Polishing (UPC/APC)
Our range includes pigtail cable assemblies equipped with LC, SC, and E2000 interfaces, available with different polishing:
- SC/UPC and LC/UPC – low return loss, suitable for general data and telecommunications purposes, for connections between patch panels and active devices.
- SC/APC and E2000/APC – angled polished (APC) surface, featuring exceptionally low return loss, beneficial in cable TV, FTTH, RF overlay, and high-sensitivity optical systems.
The pigtail kits contain 12 color-coded fibers, facilitating documentation, identification, and future maintenance. This is particularly useful in larger distribution points, ODFs, or data center environments.
Selecting Singlemode and Multimode Pigtail Cables
When selecting the appropriate cable, the primary consideration is the type of network:
- Singlemode – G.652D or G.657A/A1/A2 standard, for long distances, as well as FTTH, FTTB, backbone, and metro network applications.
- Multimode (OM2, OM3, 50/125 µm) – for shorter runs, typically within buildings, between rack cabinets and active devices, such as in data center or server farm environments.
Another important selection parameter is the jacket material (PVC or special, easy strip design), the fiber diameter (250 µm or 900 µm), and the cable length. The 900 µm versions are sturdier and easier to handle in splice boxes, while the 250 µm designs allow for a more compact arrangement in high-fiber-capacity panels.
Installability and Time Savings
The "easy strip" or "easy peel" pigtail cable assemblies expedite the work of installers, as the outer jacket can be quickly removed, allowing the fibers to be immediately spliced or connected. Using factory-terminated pigtail solutions eliminates the need for onsite grinding and polishing, thus reducing the potential for errors, installation time, and overall project costs.
