What Type of Server Rack is Ideal for Different Uses?
When selecting the right rack system, the first step is to determine the purpose and environment of use. Free-standing cabinets are recommended for larger server environments, virtualization, or storage systems, while wall cabinets are typically used for the organized placement of routers, switches, patch panels, and smaller NAS devices.
The height of the rack is standardized in U (rack units), which determines how many devices can fit on top of each other. For smaller systems, a 6–12U wall solution may be sufficient, while more serious infrastructures require free-standing cabinets of 24–42U or even higher. Depth is also important: deeper models, 800–1000 mm, allow for the comfortable placement of longer servers and storage units.
